We’re spoilt for choice with this week’s TV. Here are three classics and a pair of great modern films.
Vertigo – Frequently mentioned in discussions of the best films of all time, Vertigo is one of Hitchcock’s best. The key to its popularity is how it works on a surface level as an excellent thriller but has hidden depths and ambiguities which reveal themselves on multiple viewings. Sunday, ITV3 4.05pm
Four Lions – The first feature film by Chris Morris, best known as the man responsible for Brass Eye, is a brilliant satire of British Muslin suicide bombers. It’s a darkly comic farce which also has an emotional heart and political undertones. Sunday, Channel 4 9pm
Syriana – An excellent multi-stranded thriller with George Clooney and Matt Damon, about oil dealings in the middle east. A satisfying and entertaining watch. Monday, ITV1 10.35pm
Black Narcissus – This Classic Powell and Pressburger melodrama is stunning. A group of nuns in a remote Himalayan convent slowly start to go mad. The themes of dual personalities and sexuality make it an excellent companion to Mulholland Drive and Black Swan. Wednesday, Channel 4 1.10pm
Orphans of the Storm – What’s this? Film4 showing a silent film? Excellent. To be honest I don’t know anything about the films, but I think it’s a really bold and excellent decision to show a silent on TV. It’s apparently a French Revoltion drama from D.W. Griffith. Will certainly be setting my recorder for it. Thursday, Film4 11am
